.....Introduction

The Passat TSI EcoFuel

The Passat TSI EcoFuel uses a dual drive. That means it can be driven in both natural gas and petrol mode. In addition to the components for petrol operation, further components for natural gas operation are required. You can see these in the illustration below. You will find more detailed explanations of these components in later sections of this self-study program me.....

Engine Components

Changes to engine components

As a fuel, natural gas has a higher anti-knock index compared with petrol in addition to its clean combustion. The octane number for natural gas H can be up to RON 130. This allows an earlier ignition time without combustion knock. The efficiency increases whilst the combustion pressure and combustion temperature in the combustion chamber also increase. However, natural gas is very dry and does not have any lubricating properties like petrol. All of this leads to increased loading on the engine and requires changes to the engine components.

Pistons, piston rings, piston pins, connecting rods

The forged pistons are hard anodised in the first and second piston ring grooves. To reduce the surface pressure in the piston hub, the piston pin has been made slightly longer. The top piston ring has a high wear-resistant coating. The upper small end bearing and the small end bush are made from a more wear resistant material....

Valves, valve stem seals, valve guides

Valve stem sealThe inlet and exhaust valves are nitrated and reinforced. The valve guides are made from highly wear-resistant material. The valve stem seals have a second sealing lip that forces lubrication of the valve stem in the valve guides. A material with greater wear and corrosion resistance has been chosen for the valve seat rings in the cylinder head.

Engine Components

High-pressure injectors 1 – 4 N30 - N33

In petrol operation, the high-pressure injectors are cooled by the fuel (petrol) that flows through them. There is no cooling in natural gas mode. Since these valves protrude directly into the combustion chamber, unacceptable high temperatures would result. Two measures have therefore been taken: a second Teflon ring with a high thermal conductivity and a heat sink made from aluminium to transfer the heat from the high-pressure injector to the cylinder head.

Aluminium heat sink S425_030

Teflon ring with high thermal conductivity

Oil pump, coolant pump, coolant distributor housing

The delivery rates of the oil and coolant pumps have been increased – the oil pump has a higher drive speed and the diameter of the coolant pump impeller has been increased from 54 to 60 mm. To keep the temperature in the cylinder block down, thermostat 2 in the coolant distributor housing opens at 80 °C....

Şu an ülkemizde trafiğe çıkmış benzinli araçların neredeyse %50 den fazlası LPG ile çalışıyor.

Ticari taksi sahipleri son derece işini bilen insanlar.

Common LPG system faults and failure symptoms

Click here to fill-out our LPG repair form and we will ring you back

Having an intermittent or constant fault with you LPG autogas system can be annoying at the least and painful to your pocket at the worst. Over the last 14 years our team have resolved thousands of issues with retro fitted and factory fitted LPG autogas systems. We offer specialist lpg system diagnosis and LPG repairs for all converted vehicles.

Run you eye down the list of the most common and see if any of the lpg common faults / symptoms match yours. Once identified please fill-out our repair callback request form to arrange a service appointment

LPG switch has no lights displayed:- this can be a simple as a battery terminal connection(s) has been damaged when connected to jump start. Or the lpg wiring loom has been damaged (even corroded) breaking continuatity, the sacrificial fuse has blown(or pilfered for use elsewhere).Rectification can be time consuming.

Does not (fails to) change over to LPG:- For all injected LPG systems several engine and gas related signals need to be seen by the LPG ecu. These include a tachograph or RPM signal, coolant water temperature, vapourised Autogas pressure, petrol injection signals. Rectification is generally identifying the missing signal parameter and tracing the fault. Certain LPG system, namelyVauxhall & Ford, have additional interface boxes that fail.

Stalls on change over to LPG operation:- this is generally too much or too little gas getting through to the lpg injectors or gas venturi. Or a failure to stop the petrol injectors operating. Rectification can frequently be achieved by recalibrating the gas system, but it can also be a mechanical or electrical problem with a component .

Switch on LPG, but petrol gauge goes down:- The petrol gauge drops while the vehicle is alledgedly running on LPG autogas. First question does the vehicle use much gas when this happens? We have seen vehicles where the gas system has been disconnected from the engine. With new installations where several petrol injectors have not be wired out of circuit correctly. And directly after conversion in certain later models the petrol gauge requires a "reset"" module. Rectification is straight forward fitting of a specific module in the later cases.

LPG system stalls at idle:- in stationary (in gear) traffic, approaching junctions. Rectification can be fine tuning the lpg fuelling and not very time consuming. Engine hunts at idle:- tired auxillary air valve (idle air controller), an inlet air leak or LPG fuelling not quite right at idle. Engine races when at idle:- Air is leaking into the inlet manifold creating a lean mixture. Common when LPG converters remove the inlet manifold to fit the gas system. Stop the leak.

Petrol system runs rough after changing back from LPG operation:- LPG fuelling calibration is vay and the vehicle management system has adjusted its setting to improve conbustion while running on gas. Petrol pump failure, petrol filter clogging. Leaking LPG autogas injector(s)

Juddering when running on LPG:- Gas injector failure or more commonly a misfire. The later may not be noticiable during petrol operation. Solution change failing component, spark plugs or HT leads or coil pack or distributor cap in older models.

Rough running on LPG when engine cold:- Possibly changing over to LPG operation too soon. Adjust the change-over threshold using the appropriate interface. Or the petrol system is running rich due to its own temperature or Oxygen(Lambda) sensor fault.

Cant fully fill the LPG tank:- it should only take 80% of its stated capacity. The gas injection systems changeback to petrol when the engine pressure level drops below a given paramiter, the gas pressure is maintained by the gas vapouriser (or regulator) are mechnically sprung which requires periodic adjustment to maintain a consistant output. If this drops the system may change back prematurely, leaving gasin the tank and causing a reduced fill amount.

Changes back to petrol after 10-60 mins of operation on LPG:- failure of a gas safety shut-off valve.

Hesitates (misfires) when changing over to petrol:- poor fuel calibration, on certain gas system with incorrect original set-up, momentary low petrol pressure, or pre-failure of a module on factory-fitted Vauxhalls.

Loss of power when operating on LPG:- incorrect fuelling is the most likely cause, which can can have a number of implications. If the lpg system is over fuelling, too much going doesn't rapidly effect the engine but the catalytic converter will suffer within several thousand miles and of cource will lead to an expensive replacement. If the fuel mixture is lean (or not enough) the engine combustion temperature becomes higher and damage to the exhaust valve seats will occur costing near on a thousand pounds to resolve. A blocked gas filter can cause a lean mixture, which is changed in our regular LPG service. Rectification can be quick and inexpensive.

Low LPG economy:- LPG fuelling or engine wear. Any change to the LPG consumption should be addressed. We suggest that all LPG vehicle driver gauge their economy by resetting the trip at fill-up and on refilling check the MPG (or range for a tank full). Checking for an LPG fuelling fault is fairly simple and should take place before delving deeper and checking mechnically with a Compression test. Rectification can be rapid with recalibration of the system.

Engine misfires when running on LPG:- It is common that a misfire is dected on LPG long before any evidence when running on petrol. We can check the LPG gas injectors easily before investigating for any ignition problems, which can be time consuming and costly. Injectors do fail and is common on Vauxhall /Transit Connect between 2003-2006.

lpg conversion not working:- we have seen systems, that have not been operated for long periods, suffer from clogging or siezing of mechnical components. Stripping down and rebuilding in some cases can be more expensive than replacing with new.

lpg tank wont fill:- The simplicity of the working of a gas tank rarely cause problem, frequently out lasting the vehicle. But being mechanical the valves can fail and are easily replaced if accessable. Another example could be the tank is full and the gas system has a fault causing it not to operate, giving the driver the impression that the tank is empty.

lpg gauge shows empty:- LPG tank sender are cheaply made and exposed to the elements, are prone to corrosion and failure. Dont trust them.

lpg gauge show full:- as with the empty scenario, failure of the sender is common. And the internal mechnical arm can become jammed. A certain customer had this once and was so enraged by this, his memory became blurred about events and made a silly deflamatory youTube video about our team. Its entitled crapgascarco, here is the video link, read more constructive remarks about our

Bu bilgi aşağıdaki çok önemli:

Due to the ever increasing cost of LPG and the unsuitability of most modern petrol engines from around 2006 onwards most now suffer from severe exhaust valve and valve seat recession when converted to run on LPG. This is caused by cheap and poor quality materials being used in the manufacture of the exhaust valves and seats, and also the discontinuation of Manually Adjustable Tappets, Self Adjusting Hydraulic Tappets and engines with VVT Variable Valve Timing.

In most modern multi-valve engines in a bid to reduce prices and ease of manufacture, the makers have opted for fixed clearance or solid tappets which cannot be adjusted without extensive work and often the removal of the cylinder head. These components and materials are fine when running on petrol only, I will explain in more detail below.

This is where the problems with valve seat recession starts, LPG once vaporised is a pure vapour and has no lubricating properties at all, this then passes through the inlet valves and into the cylinder where it is ignited by the spark plugs, combustion takes place and the hot spent gasses exit through the exhaust valves.

Because these gasses are very hot and contain no lubricants or additives they very slowly start to burn the valve face and valve seat of the exhaust valve away, this process (called recession) over time eventually causes the valve to recede in to its seat eventually reducing the valve or tappet clearance to zero. Once this has happened it is only a matter of a few miles before the valve head starts to disintegrate causing loss of compression and misfire.  This will also lead to catalytic converter failure if the vehicle continues to be driven with misfires by vay off unburnt fuel passing through the exhaust system to the catalytic convertor.

On some cars such as:

All V6 Jaguar / Ford Engines

All Freelander 2's

All V8 Discovery 3's

All V8 Range Rover Sports with super-charged and normally aspirated engines

All V8 Range Rovers manufactured after 2006 with super-charged and normally aspirated engines  All the above Land-Rovers now use Ford engines.

Also most Fords

All Vauxhalls after 2006

Subaru, Hondas, Toyotas, Lexus and Nissans can suffer in less than 10,000 miles, even with lubrication systems such as Flashlube fitted these oil injection systems help a little but will not prevent wear entirely.

Pre 2006 L322 Range Rovers with BMW engines and Older P38 4.0 and 4.6 V8 Rover engines are fine and will easily cover large mileages

Caution must be used with Flashlube or similar systems as excess dosing will severely damage oxygen sensors and catalytic convertors. In the past we have experimented fitting hardened valve seats at great expense to Vauxhalls, Nissan X Trails and Primeras along with Flashlube kits and all have suffered valve recession damage within 20k miles the Vauxhall Zafira in fewer than 12k miles
